After Class One

Hi everyone,

I think we got off to a great start on Monday and it was a pleasure to meet everyone.  This class we did an overview of the course, introduced ourselves and read an article about "baby talk".  For this week, I would like you to try out the blog -- just post a brief message about what teaching experience you have and what age/grade you would like to work with.
Next week we will start posting our ideas about the readings and activities. Also, please bring some materials for the collages we will make (scissors, glue, construction paper, and other decorative objects, like old ribbon, etc.).

Have a great week!

  1. Hi all,
I enjoyed the first class and I am excited about the weeks to come. I am a grade 2/3 teacher and have been for the past 5 years. The year prior to that I taught special education at the high school level. Before becoming a teacher I was a special education teaching assistant for 15 years. I am ECE certified and have previously taught a preschool program in a daycare setting for four years. I am now working on my post Bach in Early Learning and excited about this course.

  2. Hello;
I left my intro comment on the previous entry.
... As for Baby Einstein I confess that my son and I listened to a bit of this while he was a newborn.
As a general rule, I think anything parents do with their children that naturally flows from loving care will line up with the child's wellbeing. It's unfortunate when consumerist pressures operate on the natural parental desire to see their child develop well. Literacy is one part of the mysterious whole of the little person; I'm sure words spoken and sung lovingly by a parent (or anyone) are as edifying as the "Baby Einstein" franchise.

  3. Hi All:
I am working on completing the PDP program and was a member of the amazing Burnaby Community Module. At the end of this semester I will have a minor in Early Childhood as well as Learning Disabilities. My Practical experience was teaching grade 4, 5 and 6, but I ran a licensed family daycare prior to going back to school. I am open to teaching any grade from kindergarten through grade 7. I enjoy working with children of all ages, although I feel a little intimidated at the prospect of teaching high school students. I am looking forward to learning more about teaching younger students so I will feel more confident going into a lower grade.

  5. Hello Everyone! :)
I am currently finishing up my last semester of the PDP program. My journey started in Surrey with the C3 module. Upon completing the program I will have an early learning minor. I am a dancer and a dance teacher and have my Bachelor of Fine Arts. I have been teaching dance for years, and I am excited to extend my practice into the classroom. In my long practicum I taught a grade one two split. I am open to teaching any grade, however love working with the primary grades. I love the challenge and excitement the little ones pose. I am looking forward to learning as much as I can in this class to help better my practice as a professional educator.

  6. Hello everyone,

I am finishing off my Bachelor of Arts with an English major and a minor in Early Childhood Education, and am planning to enter into the PDP program once that is completed. I would like to work with children in the primary grades, as I think that these years are quite important to setting a positive perception of school and learning for children. I strongly believe that teachers have an enormous power to awaken the intellect, ability, imagination and desires of children to help lead them into a life-long love of learning. I have been volunteering at an elementary school for this past year, working with grades K-2 and absolutely love it. I am looking forward to this class so that I myself can become both more effective in teaching and a better student.

  7. Hi,
I am half way through completing a post baccalaureate diploma in early childhood education. I am a certified teacher, but not currently practicing. Although I am interested in teaching k - 7; I really want to be a kindergarten teacher. There is something special about that age group; they are still little and sweet, but very capable. I also love observing the development between the beginning of kindergarten and the end; they are almost completely different people. I have worked in a full day kindergarten class, and I completed my teaching practicum in two kindergarten/grade 1 split classes. I used to be a sparks leader and a school program guide at VanDusen Gardens.
I live in Burnaby, and love to read, write, and do yoga.

  8. Hello All,

I am Nathan and I am nearing the end of a Kinesiology Major and a Minor in Early Learning. I have worked with kids since I was 15, teaching as an instructor at a bike camp. It was a good fit for me as I am a competitive road cyclist, but it also showed me how much I enjoy teaching children. From there a few of the other things with kids I have done include volunteering at the Port Moody Public Library (reading with kids) and in a Coquitlam Elementary School. Currently I work at a Daycare and I am the Supervisor of a bike camp.

I would ideally teach Grade One, but K-3 works for me. I hope to start PDP in the Fall of 2012, so I still have a ways to go on my seemingly endless stay at SFU.

  9. Hi!

I'm Christina and I am working on my second semester of PDP. I took an interrupt from 405 last semester because I decided to switch from Secondary to Elementary. I'm very excited about my decision, and am happy to be working on my B.Ed as a second degree with a minor in Early Childhood Education.

As far as experience goes, I have volunteered at a middle school working in the Learning Resource Centre and in a grade 7 class, I completed my 401/402 short practicum in two grade 9 English classes, I have helped out in a Montessori preschool class, and I currently work at an Out of School centre for children aged 4-11. I love this age group!

  10. Hi Everyone!

My name is Deni and I am in my final semester of PDP (yay!). I have a BA with a major in English and minors in Psyc and Learning Disabilities. I am now working on a minor in Early Learning to get my BEd as a second degree. My PDP placement was in a grade 1/2 classroom. I enjoy that age and would ideally like to teach K-2.

My other experience working with children has been teaching dancing, working at summer camps /daycares, and tutoring. Oh, and I have four year old twin girls that keep me on my toes!

I hope we all have a great semester!

  11. Hello everyone
I am Justine and I am comleting my 4th year at SFU. I am currently enrolled in the September intake for PDP.
I am working on completing an ECE minor. I hope that this minor will help me better understand the children that I may one day be teaching.
I have volunteered in a school for the past 3 years, in Grade 2/3 and 3/4 splits.
I have worked as a swimming instructor and lifeguard for the past 5 years. I enjoy teaching all of the children that I have had in my classes. I teach a vast age range (6 month old babies to 60 year old adults). I have found that I primarily enjoy teaching children in the K-3 age range. I find that children these ages are always keen to participate and are willing to learn on their own. I love how enthusiastic they can be and hope to teach these aged children in the future.
    See you all on Monday!

  12. Hello Everyone,

I am currently in my last semester of PDP and working on completing my BEd.as a second degree with a minor in Early Learning. For my practical experience during the 405 semester I was placed in a grade 6 and 7 classroom. I have to admit that I really enjoy teaching these grades but am also very interested in working with younger children and teaching anything from K-7. I have lots of previous experience volunteering in primary classrooms including working with Kindergarten students. I look forward to many of the discussions that will take place during this class and increasing my knowledge on topics that will help me better understand how young minds develop so I can in turn help students develop to their highest potential.

  13. Hello,

This is my second semester of PLP. I have been working as an autism suypport worker for the past seven years and I am looking forward to starting my practicum in the Fall. I currently work in a high school in North Vancouver, but I have also supported children in pre-school/kindergarten. I am passionate about Early Childhood Education, especially now that I have a 15-month-old daughter (and yes, I do talk to her lots).

  14. Hello Everyone,
I completed PDP last January, and am currently working towards my PBD in Early Learning. Throughout PDP I thought I wanted to be an intermediate teacher or high primary, that is until my TOC day and phase out week. I spent time then in K and K/1 classrooms and fell in love with this age group. I then decided to come back and complete my Early Learning.

  16. Hello Everyone,

My name is Vanessa. I am in the Bachelors of Arts Program, with a major in Communications and a minor in Early Childhood Education. I am currently a tutor at an afterschool program in South Burnaby, which is facilitated to help children whose families are new to Canada. I work with African children that range from 4 to 12 years old. Also, last year I was fortunate enough to spend 3 months in the South Bronx, New York working with an amazing grade 2/3 class. Once I complete PDP, I hope to be teaching at the K-5 level. I love working with the younger grades because they always seem to amaze me. I love their energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. From this class, I hope to gain new skills and insights that will help me become an effective teacher; thus in turn, helping me make a profound impact on my students.

  17. Hi everyone,

My name is Chloe and I am in my last semester of PDP. I taught in a grade 3/4/5 split class for my short and long practicum. While I was volunteering I was in a grade 6/7 split class and I worked in the student services department for grade 8 students. Other than that I have worked in daycare with kids for about 5 years now, so I have spent time with children ages 2 - 12 and have gotten to know a wide range in interests and abilities over the years.

Although a lot of my classroom experience is with intermediate grades, I think I like the primary grades the most because they are so fun to be around!!

I also intend on pursuing a counseling masters in the near future.

  18. Hello Educ. 466!
I'm the Angela that sneezes when I pluck my eyebrows...so you're not confused. :)
I am very excited to be finishing up my last semester of PDP. During my practicum I was placed in a full day kindergarten classroom, which I wasn’t too happy about at first. I wasn’t sure if kindergarten was for me... but I was 100% wrong! I ended up having a fantastic practicum and discovered my love of kindergarten, which guided me to purse an early childhood minor. I look forward to all this course has to offer and hope to apply everything I have learned to my future kindergarten class. Hope everyone has a great semester, all the best!

  19. Hi everyone,

I live in Coquitlam. I am studying to become a teacher. I am taking Educ 466 because I am interested in teaching children in the primary grades. I really enjoy working with young children and I hope this course will give me more knowledge and insight on how to teach the young children.

  20. Hello Educ 466!

I am Katy and I am in my second semester in PDP. My first practicum experience was in a Gr.3/4 class and I had a wonderful time. I always wanted to teach k-gr. 2, but I was wrong, I guess all the primary grades are appealing to me. I am looking forward to taking this course and being able to apply it my 405 experience and later teaching experience.

  21. Hi Everyone,

My name is Melissa. You may not remember me and that is because I was not able to make it to the first class. I was out with the flu. So I'm really excited to meet you all tomorrow night. Here is a little about myself.

I graduated from SFU's teaching program in 2006 with a minor in Learning Disabilities. I was in the ITEMX module so I did my short practicum in Oaxaca, Mexico teaching two classes. I taught a grade 1 class English as well as a grade 2 class English and Science. For my long practicum, I taught at Charles Dickens Annex in a K-3 class.

Currently, I am a teacher-on-call for North Vancouver. Last summer, I decided to go back to school to get a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in both Special Education and Early Childhood Education. I am taking this course to explore my passion for young children, and to build on my own experiences by understanding the theory and practice of Early Childhood Education.

  24. Hello there :)
I'm from New Westminster, and I'm in my third semester of PDP. I'm hoping to get a minor in early learning education. I did my first practicum in India with Tibetan students, and my second practicum in a full day K class in Burnaby.

I would love to teach kindergarten, ideally. I've worked with kids for the last 6 years through summer camps, daycare, and afterschool care programs.

I had a really great time in class on Monday; I'm super happy with how social and welcoming everyone is in the class, and I look forward to spending the summer with you guys :)

  25. Hi everyone,

My name is Rosemary and I am in my forth year at SFU. I am working towards a major in English and a minor in Early Childhood Education with the hopes of applying for PDP within the next year. Currently, I am working at a daycare with school aged children grades K-6. Also, I have been volunteering at an elementary school in a full day Kindergarten classroom which I have enjoyed every minute of. After PDP, I hope to be working with the primary grades, specifically kindergarten. I love the fact that younger children are always so excited and eager to learn new things. Since the early years of a child's life are so important for their development, I would love to be a part of influencing that development in a positive way. I am very excited about this course in being able to help build my skills and enhance my knowledge as a future early childhood educator.

  26. Hey everyone, here is my second posting as my first seems to have disappeared.

I am Nathan, in my 5th year of a Kinesiology major. I am also completing certificates in nutrition and active living, as well as an Early Learning Minor.

I am a competitive cyclist, which led to my first experience with kids at the age of 15 as a bike camp instructor. It was then that I saw that teaching and helping children is what I wanted to do. Since then, my experience with kids includes a high school work experience placement in an elementary school, reading with children at the local public library and currently has me volunteering in an elementary school classroom, as well as working at a day care as part of the after school program and supervising a kids bike camp.

Ideally I would like to teach Grade One, but anything in the K-3 range works for me.

  27. Hello everyone,

My name is Betty. I am currently a fourth year student majoring in Psychology and Early Childhood. 28. Hi everyone,
I am very excited to have just joined the class/blog and am looking forward to class on Monday. I am in my last semester of PDP and have loved both my practicum experiences in kindergarten. I have a MA in History but am hoping to continue this amazing journey as a kindergarten teacher :)

  29. Hi everyone,

My name is Sandy and I'm in PDP's LUC - Literacy in the Urban Classroom Module. I graduated with my major in Psychology last year. I live in Vancouver, and did my short practicum in Surrey and will do my fall practicum in Surrey as well. I have experience as a student teacher with Grade 4 students and just days ago found out I'm placed in a 6/7 split class for the fall. So, I really want to broaden my horizons by learning as much as I can about the younger years through Early Childhood Education as I don't have experience in the classroom working with them; however last year I was apart of Friends of Simon Tutoring Project that gave me the opportunity to tutor young children from diverse backgrounds in an afterschool program. Tutoring these kids has given me the exposure needed working with young kids but I wish to gain more insight and skills that can help me become an effective teacher in the years to come! On that note, I look forward to getting to know everyone in our class and wish everyone a great summer ahead :)..

    - Sandy Gill

  30. Hi everyone,

I'm a 3rd year psychology student who is also doing an early childhood education minor at SFU. I've volunteered at a preschool and also worked as a part-time tutor at a learning centre for students from K-7. Working with primary versus intermediate students with a mix variety of ages, I've noticed that they contrast in serveral ways. For example, using different strategies and techniques to teach a specific grade, some may work better for younger kids while others work better for older kids. Both were a great experience for me, but if I had to choose a specific grade to teach, I would choose to teach grade 5. I believe that at the grade 5 level, students are more stable with their education, and through my experiences, I've learned to interact more comfortably with students in the intermediate years compared to the primary years. I enjoy giving the opportunity to use my knowledge and having the students understand the concept.

  31. Hello everyone. I'm sorry this is so late. I had a few computer problems over the weekend. My name is Alicia and I'm 22. I studied English as my major at SFU and just finished my first semester of PDP. I did my short practicum in China in a grade 5 English immersion class. Although I did grade 5 for my short practicum I really enjoy working with kindergarten aged children. I was a Sparks leader for several years and I did volunteer work in schools in kindergarten and in a grade 3/4 split. I'm really looking forward to learning more about the intricacies of ECE.

  32. Hi everyone!

I also wrote a comment earlier in the week, but my comment seems to have disappeared. I understand that Blogger had some major issues this week that affected many blogs. I'll take this as a reminder to copy-paste my posts to Word (which I'll admit I hadn't done yet).

My name is Deni and I am in my final semester of PDP. I was in the Playworks module and my placement was in a grade 1/2 class in Pitt Meadows. Ideally, I would like to teach K-2. I have a BA from SFU with a minor in Learning Disabilities and I am currently completing a BEd as a second degree with a minor in Early Learning.

Besides PDP, my experience working with children includes teaching dancing, tutoring, and working at summer camps. Also, I am a mother of four-year-old twin girls who keep me on my toes!

I hope we have a great semester!

my name is Vicki and this is my last semester at SFU. I am completing my Bachelors of Arts with a major in Linguistics and a minor in early childhood education. I do not have any previous experience in teaching children, but was a childcare provider for a few months last year. If I were to teach, I would prefer to teach K-2.

  34. hi all !

My name is Ingrid. I am working on getting my BEd in general studies, with a minor in Early learning and Curriculum Development. I am also in the process of applying for PDP Jan 2012 intake...so fingers crossed :)! I did some work experience as a teacher's assistant in a Kindergarten class. I LOVED IT! Aside from the fact that 5 year olds are so darn cute, I enjoyed the fact that these young children were so eager to learn. I loved being able to witness them progressing in their reading, writing, math skills. I am so grateful to have found a teacher that allowed me to be in her class monday to friday for half of the year. I really got to know each child and their different learning styles. It was interesting to put into practice a lot of the things I have learned in my education classes. When I finally get to be a teacher, I want to teach K-3.

A little about me: I live with my husband in Surrey. Besides being a student, I am also a new mommy of a 7 month old son named Marcos Benjamin. I have two little chihuahuas. Thankfully they all get along...so far.

I look forward to this class.

  35. Hi all… my name is Celina and I am in my last semester of PDP. My BEd and its multitude of minors are almost finished and I’m looking forward to getting back into the workforce. I have about three or four years of volunteer/practicum with school aged children, mostly within Montessori and multi-age philosophies, although my long practicum was in a traditional grade 2 classroom. I really enjoy the dynamics of a multi-age room and k – 3 is my definitely my target age group. They just have an energy and excitement about learning that I really love. I’m looking forward to this class as its progressive content is very in-line with my personal feelings about how education should be undertaken… I look forward to working with you all though out the semester.
